Three top scientists from the Radio Communications Research Unit at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory have been awarded the prestigious IEE Measurement Prize.

Dr Jon Eastment, John Bradford and John Goddard were presented with their medal, together with their certificates and GBP 1000 in cash by Seton Bennett, Director of International Metrology at the National Physical Laboratory during a ceremony held at the IEE, on 8th December 2004.

The National Physical Laboratory sponsored the award.

The IEE Measurement Prize is awarded in recognition of an outstanding single contribution or for a body of work over a period of time, which promotes the science, art and practice of measurement using electrical, electronic or electromagnetic techniques.

Dr Eastment and his team were chosen as recipients for this award for their work on "Radar measurement of cloud, precipitation and related atmospheric processes".

Over the past 10 years, Dr Eastment's unit has pioneered the development of innovative, high-performance radar systems for quantitative remote-sensing measurements of meteorological phenomena and processes.

The judges reported that the nominees had "successfully designed, constructed and operated a variety of world-leading microwave and millimetre-wave radar systems employing a combination of techniques".

When presented with his medal, Dr Eastment said: "My colleagues and I are delighted to have received this prestigious award from the IEE for our work on weather radar".

"This is an exciting area of research, in which the UK is at the forefront".

"We would like to thank our coworkers at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Chilbolton Observatory for their contributions over many years".
