Connectors boost automotive interconnect density

A JAE Europe product story

MX34-series connectors use a 2.2mm contact pitch and a double row of contacts to deliver higher density PCB-to-cable interconnects in automotive applications.

JAE Europe's new MX34-series connectors use a 2.2mm contact pitch and a double row of contacts to deliver higher density PCB-to-cable interconnects in automotive applications.

Features include robust, miniature box-section pin headers and preset-type secondary locking to enable rapid, failsafe assembly.

The MX34 series is a low profile connector system that can be used in applications including rear-seat DVD players, roof-mounted controls such as courtesy lights, alarm sensors and rain sensors, and other cabin-mounted accessories.

Miniaturisation in these areas maximises space for occupants.

Assembling a harness into a tight space or through small bulkhead apertures is also easier and more reliable.

JAE is early into the market with 2.2mm-pitch connectors, and has achieved additional footprint savings by leveraging its thin-wall moulding technology and in-house tooling capabilities.

Despite the substantial reduction in wall section brought about by adopting the new thin-wall construction, MX34 connectors are rated to 3A per way.

They are available between 12 and 40 contacts.

The choice of a straight or right-angle pin header allows use in a wide range of applications and locations.

All units also comply with EU RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE (Waste in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directives, allowing them to be safely designed into vehicle subassemblies and harnesses scheduled for production beyond 2006.

Several features aid assembly, including a box type pin header capable of withstanding high external forces, double leaf spring contacts that are highly resistant to twisting, and a preset type retainer that aids detection of incomplete contact insertion.

A lock spring is also provided, featuring a bridge to protect the contacts from external load.

MX34-series connectors operate from -40 to +85C, provide insulation resistance greater than 100Mohm and dielectric withstand voltage 1000V AC for 1min.

Maximum contact resistance is 5mohm, and durability is 50 insertions.
