Visible solid-state laser adopts telecomms design
The FCD488 is the first telecomms-based visible solid-state laser designed for biomedical, industrial and semiconductor applications.
New from JDSU, the FCD488 is the first telecomms-based visible solid-state laser designed for biomedical, industrial and semiconductor applications.
The FCD488 is claimed to change the market landscape by shifting from designs based on free-space optics and specialised manufacturing, to a telecomms-based, all-in-fibre design platform that capitalises on high volume manufacturing processes.
The result is increased product stability and reliability.
The fibre based architecture reduces the complexity of instrument design and manufacturing for customers resulting in faster time to market and reduced need for realignment, which can result in lower cost of ownership.
The FCD488's compact package size, which is a third of the size used in leading competing architectures, addresses the trend towards smaller end-user device packaging used in biomedical, industrial and semiconductor applications.
All control electronics are packaged within the laser head.
The device's electrical efficiency equates to less than a third of the heat dissipation in current market offerings.
Unlike the leading competitor offerings, no heatsink is needed facilitating customer integration and enabling smaller, desktop size instruments.
The FCD488 uses components from JDSU's current telecomms portfolio, such as diode lasers with a lifetime in excess of 100,000 hours.
"We believe that with the FCD488 JDSU is changing the rules of the game when it comes to high-precision commercial lasers", said Phillip Meredith, Senior Vice President and General Manager for JDSU's Commercial Lasers Product Group.
"Typically, high-precision commercial laser applications have labored under a highly customised environment which can be a time-consuming process".
"With the introduction of FCD488, JDSU provides a telecomms-based commercial laser platform that offers improved design flexibility, electrical efficiency and increased reliability".
The FCD488 is a continuous wave 10 and 20mW 488nm laser and is available in two output configurations: free space and fibre delivered.
