"PCI-X is emerging as the choice for the migration of PCI-based designs to higher performance applications, and this design kit from Avnet and Jungo will help speed the adoption of this important new standard", commented Mark Aaldering, Senior Director of the Xilinx IP Solutions Division.
"The modular architecture of the PCI-X development board allows designers to quickly implement a variety of available addon modules and IP cores.
Designers will be able to create flexible, scalable applications that can be tailored to a multitude of markets including servers, storage, video and networking".
"One of the strengths of the PCI-X standard is its ability to use much of the existing PCI infrastructure", said Ophir Herbst, General Manager of Jungo's Software Tools Division.
"Jungo WinDriver is the industry standard for PCI driver development and much of our experience and tools can be easily used in a PCI-X environment.
Users of this new design kit will be able to quickly and easily generate drivers and applications for PCI-X devices when using the Jungo WinDriver tool.
This will save months of development effort and will also make it easier to expand existing designs into new higher performance applications with very little added cost".
"Avnet Design Services is pleased to announce the development of this new design kit.
The development of this kit required a combination of skills and capabilities from Avnet, Jungo and Xilinx and shows that it takes a wide range of partners to provide real world system level design platforms", said Jim Schaeffer, Senior Vice President of Avnet Design Services.
"Our broad set of partners allows us to address a wide range of application solutions without the need to make design compromises".
The PCI-X design kit features the Xilinx V5.0 PCI-X 64/133MHz core.
The core can be easily configured for the Xilinx Virtex-2 XC2V1500-6 device over the web using the Xilinx PCI-X download and configuration tool.
The core is compliant to the PCI-X 2.0 mode-1 specification and uses Xilinx Smart-IPT technology to optimise performance and capacity of the FPGA implementation.
Extended features of the core include the PCI-X capability item, power management capability item and the message signalled interrupt capability item.
The core requires approximately 2300 four-input lookup tables (LUTs) and 1500 registers, depending on the features selected.
The Avnet Design Services Virtex-2 development board is a full featured development board in a PCI form factor that includes a Xilinx Virtex-2 XC2V1500-6 FPGA, 133MHz 128Mbyte DDR SDRAM DIMM, 8Mbyte Flash, JTAG, System ACE and several expansion connectors.
Addon modules are available from Avnet that include audio, video, Ethernet, USB 2.0, IrDA and memory.
WinDriver from Jungo enables development of high-performance drivers for PCI and USB peripheral devices that run Windows 98, Me, NT, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Windows CE.NET, Linux, Solaris and VxWorks, providing crossplatform capabilities that enable porting of code between all supported operating systems.
WinDriver provides design kit customers with graphical development environments, application programming interfaces (APIs), hardware diagnostic utilities and samples that enable accelerated driver development and speed time to revenue.
The PCI-X design kit will be available for shipment in late October.
