Embedded multimedia platform aids
networking

The Digital Video Engine-2 (DVE-2) is aimed at developers and OEMs that need audio and video I/O capability in a networked environment.

The Digital Video Engine-2 (DVE-2) is aimed at developers and OEMs that need audio and video I/O capability in a networked environment Based on a 200MHz Philips Semiconductor Nexperia (TriMedia), the DVE-2 is manufactured by Momentum Data Systems (MDS) and distributed in the UK by Kane Computing

The DVE-2 offers a feature set and development environment that simplifies moving applications from hosted systems to an embedded product as well as the fast creation of new embedded applications.

The DVE-2 provides multiple interfaces to real world audio, video, and network I/O.

Using a Flash memory Disk-on-Chip system for nonvolatile storage provides a standard 'PC-like' file system to store programs and setup data as well as archive data for later retrieval.

The 200MHz Philips Nexperia pnx1302 is programmed in C/C++ and supported by library functions including audio and video compression, video processing and text/graphics overlay generation.

DSPOS's Fusion protocol suite is available for high performance network applications.

Features include multiple, multiplexed video/audio input channels to allow multiple sources to be streamed across a network, 10/100 Ethernet and single chip flash Disk-on-Chip from 64 up to 576Mbyte.

Disk-on-Chip simplifies implementation of web and FTP services as it appears to the TriMedia as a conventional file system, as opposed to a large block of unmanaged memory.

The larger sizes allow storage of a large amount of compressed video or audio for on demand playback such as that needed by self-service customer kiosks.

Kane Computing provides a complete one-stop software source by offering the DVE-2 with a full development environment (the NDK) that includes the compiler, debugger, real-time OS and basic audio, video and data management libraries.

Combined with the optional audio/video codec and networking libraries complex applications become simple via a 'building-block' approach.

Optional libraries available from MDS and 3rd parties including audio decoders such as Dolby audio (AC3 decode), video decoders such as MPEG4, and codecs for things like H.263 video conferencing.

These can be combined with the Fusion Network Stack from DSPOS to create, for example, a complete network application such as consumer oriented Internet radios and set top boxes with a web interface, or OEM products in the medical (remote monitoring), retail (VCR-free kiosks) and security fields.
