First GPIB-controlled autotuning TEC
tester

The Model 2510-AT autotuning TEC SourceMeter from Keithley Instruments is designed for testing and control of thermoelectric coolers (TECs) used in telecomms laser diode modules (LDMs).

The Model 2510-AT autotuning TEC SourceMeter from Keithley Instruments is designed for testing and control of thermoelectric coolers (TECs) used in telecomms laser diode modules (LDMs) By combining temperature control and measurement capabilities, the Model 2510-AT allows precise control of LDM wavelength and light intensity output, plus shorter setup times and higher production throughput

It is the optoelectronics industry's first GPIB-controlled autotuning TEC controller, which automatically optimises the PID (proportional-integral-derivative) coefficients of the temperature control loop and facilitates integration with other instruments in an L-I-V (light intensity-current-voltage) test stand.

The Model 2510-AT provides two modes of autotuning - minimum overshoot (for device protection) and minimum settling time (for fastest time to stable temperature setpoint).

With a maximum output of 50W, the unit's programmable power, current, and temperature limits offer maximum protection against damage to the LDM under test.

The Model 2510-AT is designed to solve the problem of time consuming test stand setup prior to testing LDMs used in dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) fibre-optic communication systems.

It can make a significant contribution to the efforts of the fibre-optic communication companies to improve productivity in LDM manufacturing by enabling quick optimisation of the thermal control loop.

Technical Details.

The PID control of the Model 2510-AT is implemented in the digital domain with the user having the flexibility to set up to the fifth decimal place in the PID coefficients.

A modified Zeigler-Nichols algorithm is used to determine the optimal coefficients for each thermal step during the autotuning process.

The SourceMeter design of the Model 2510-AT provides numerous advantages over separate source and measurement instruments, including lower acquisition and maintenance costs, conservation of rack space, easier system integration and programming, and broad dynamic range for dealing with a wide variety of LDMs.

The unit also supports more types and values of temperature sensors than any other TEC controller.

Compatible sensors include thermistors (100Ohm, 1kOhm, 10kOhm, 100kOhm), RTDs (100Ohm), and semiconductor temperature sensors (AD590, LM335).

Four-wire source/measure for thermistors and RTDs enhance measurement accuracy by eliminating lead length effects for low-level measurements.

A Peltier/TEC ohms function has been included in the Model 2510-AT to enable more accurate testing of the TEC Peltier heater/cooler following its assembly in an LDM, where physical damage of the TEC is possible.

A reversing DC test current eliminates errors caused by device heating associated with conventional DC resistance measurements on Peltier devices. Request a free brochure from Keithley Instruments ...
