Kemet claims to have overcome the traditional limitations in materials and manufacturing processes that have previously limited the voltage ratings of surface-mount polymer tantalum chip capacitors with the release of the first-ever 35V rated device Through advancements in materials and manufacturing techniques, Kemet has successfully constructed and qualified the first polymer capacitors suitable for applications up to 28V continuous duty

In addition, these devices have demonstrated surge voltage handling capabilities in excess of 46V.

This increase in voltage provides designers working on higher voltage applications, such as those with 24 and 28V power input rails, the option of incorporating polymer tantalum technology with its significant performance advantages, into new designs.

Kemet's initial offering is the T521 series in the popular V case size (7.3 x 4.3 x 1.9mm) with a capacitance of 15uF and a maximum ESR rating of 100mohm.

Future releases will include taller case heights of 3.0mm with target capacitance values of 22 and 33uF plus smaller footprint devices (3.5 x 2.8 x 2.0mm) targeting capacitance values of 6.8uF and less.

The T521 series has high ripple current capability and endurance of 1000 hours at 125C.

The Pb-free RoHS-compliant devices have a safe failure mode and an operating temperature range of -55 to +125C.

Mass production quantities will begin during the first quarter of 2008.

"This technology allows us to meet a long-standing need of many of our customers", says Per Loof, Chief Executive Officer.

"Kemet is striving to become 'the capacitance company', and the leadership we are now showing in technology represents a significant step forward toward reaching that goal".
