Kontron has signed a landmark OEM agreement to license MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition for inclusion with Kontron's next generation of ATCA and AMC platforms.

Kontron, a market leader in embedded computing technology has signed a landmark OEM agreement to license MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) for inclusion with Kontron's next generation of Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture (ATCA) and Advanced Mezzanine Card (AMC) platforms.

With first shipments scheduled for the end of 2004, the integrated hardware/ software solution will support the rapidly growing customer demand for highly available, standards-based platforms for AdvancedTCA applications development across a spectrum of carrier-grade environments.

As the emerging de facto standard for communications and network equipment, growth in the AdvancedTCA segment is projected to reach several billion dollars within the next two years.

Signaling its intention to become an industry leader in the new carrier-grade system standard, Kontron recently rolled out a complete line of AdvancedTCA-compliant platforms including system chassis, high-performance AdvancedTCA processing blades and high-availability base fabric switches.

The basic platform elements-hardware, Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) firmware, Hardware Platform Interface (HPI) support, operating system and applications software-are complemented by the recent licensing arrangement that will see the installation of MontaVista's carrier-grade Linux in all current and next-generation Kontron ATCA platform solutions.

An advanced Linux-based development platform engineered specifically for robust carrier-grade application requirements, CGE is used in telecommunications and data communications networking applications, including SGSN (Serving GPRS Support Node), GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node), RNC (Radio Network Controller), and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

CGE enhances standard Linux with added real-time, high-availability and high-reliability features based on the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) Carrier-Grade Linux Specification as well as the Service AvailabilityTM Forum specifications.

"Integrating MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition into our next-generation platforms greatly enhances our design-win prospects with our customers, the top tier of telecom equipment manufacturers," said Benoit Robert, Kontron's executive director of product management.

"Kontron's OEM partnership with MontaVista enables us to provide highly available, application-ready platforms to simplify the overall product development effort and speed time-to-market of our customers' next-generation telecom equipment solutions." "We're excited to be working with Kontron to deliver state-of-the-art, carrier-grade solutions that will offer scalable, application-ready development platforms to our mutual telecom equipment customers," said Robert Monkman, senior product marketing manager for MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition Linux.

"CGE clearly addresses key telecom availability needs in compliance with all standards-based feature requirements considered critical benchmarks by our top-tier customers.".
