Surface mount microphones go digital
The new digital series of SiSonic SMD microphones represents the worlds first "digital" surface mount microphone based on Knowles' industry proven MEMS microphone technology.
The new digital series of SiSonic SMD microphones represents the worlds first "digital" surface mount microphone based on Knowles' industry proven MEMS microphone technology.
With availability in multiple package sises, the device is ideally suited for applications where component density is at an absolute premium - such as mobile phones, digital still cameras and MP3 players.
Engineering samples are available today, with mass production scheduled for Q1 2006.
Compared with the "analogue" SiSonic microphone, the digital SiSonic is a pulse density modulation (PDM) device, has an integrated sleep mode, and is compatible with stereo input applications.
This microphone simplifies the design process in multiple portable electronics devices.
The design of the digital SiSonic incorporates the same patented MEMS technology used across the expanding SiSonic product range.
Therefore, it can be assembled using standard automatic pick-and-place equipment, conforms to lead-free requirements, and is compatible with typical industry Pb-free solder profiles (260C reflow for 30s maximum).
"With over three successful years of high volume production and more than 100 customers currently using our standard analogue MEMS microphones, the SiSonic product portfolio continues its expansion".
"As the leader in MEMS microphones, Knowles is reaching new levels of integration in microphone technology with the introduction of the digital series", said Jeffrey Niew, Vice President and General Manager.
SiSonic is available with a standard supply voltage range of 1.6 to 2.9V, has maximum current consumption of 500uA, is compatible with high temperature reflow, and is rated to operate up to 100C.
