Smart cards put to the (accredited) test
KTL now has the ability to test the interoperability between smart cards and readers to EMV Level 1, and the full range of test scenarios for EMV Level 2 as defined by EMVco.
KTL now has the ability to test the interoperability between smart cards and readers to EMV Level 1, and the full range of test scenarios for EMV Level 2 as defined by EMVco - the globally recognised standard for JCB, MasterCard and Visa.
This means that the Hull-based world leader in test, certification and approvals can now offer a complete smart card test service, including EMC, safety, telephone interface and electrical/electronic compatibility.
EMVCo was formed to manage, maintain and enhance the EMV integrated circuit card specifications for payment systems as technology advances and the implementation of chip card programmes becomes more prevalent.
EMVCo ensures that single terminal and card approval processes are developed at a level that will allow cross payment system interoperability through compliance with the EMV specifications.
EMVco joint founders (along with EuroPay) MasterCard and Visa have worked jointly to develop specifications that define a set of requirements to ensure interoperability between chip cards and terminals on a global basis, regardless of the manufacturer, the financial institution, or where the card is used.
Comments KTL's Telecomms Group Manager, Karim Sharf: "Level 1 is targeted at applications such as set top boxes, security and even vending machines".
"It defines physical size, electrical performance, chip location etc, and we already have an excellent relationship with manufacturers of such products".
"Level 2 is targeted more at financial transactions - such as EPOS - and purchasing the MasterCard-accredited test scripts means that we are ideally positioned to service the test requirements of this sector of the smart card business".
He added: "The addition of this new service will allow KTL to provide a complete test solution for Level 1 and Level 2 smart card applications, and enhances KTL's already extensive portfolio of services, making our lab a true one-stop-shop".
