Kuka Controls has certified Visuality Systems' CIFS NQ client and server middleware for compatibility with its real-time extension VxWin.

Kuka Controls has certified Visuality Systems' CIFS NQ client and server middleware for compatibility with its real-time extension VxWin As a result, designers can be assured that a system based on VxWin will not suffer any restrictions in real-time capability or stability when CIFS is installed

With the NQ server, embedded devices can be integrated seamlessly into the Windows networking environment.

This enables Windows to easily and conveniently access files on embedded systems that are stored for example on a Flash file system.

In the context of the recently initiated certification program, Kuka Controls tests the performance and compatibility of hardware and software components while used in combination with Kuka Controls real-time extension platforms.

VxWin combines Wind River's VxWorks with Windows XP on a single CPU.

However, there is still no possibility for the RTOS to directly share files in a Microsoft Windows networking environment as VxWorks does not support the Microsoft file sharing protocol.

This is where CIFS NQ steps in: the installation of CIFS NQ enables VxWorks to perform full server, client and client/server file sharing functions.

Without the possibility to share files directly, co-operation between Windows XP and VxWorks under VxWin requires the transfer of entire files via ftp to the real-time operating system's memory which could lead to memory shortage.

Files larger than the RTOS' memory can therefore not be executed by VxWorks.

CIFS NQ enables multiple embedded devices to remotely browse each other's shared folders and to directly read, write, edit, copy, delete and update each other's files in the same way as if the other device was one of its own drives.

Furthermore, VxWorks can independently access Windows network printers.

CIFS NQ enables VxWorks to use Windows drives.

This not only simplifies work with two operating systems, but also accelerates it, especially in case of large applications or files.

CIFS NQ has very low memory requirements and is thus optimised for the use under VxWin.
