Joseph M Renaud, State Aerospace and Defence Advisor for the Ohio Department of Development, recently visited L-3 Communications Cincinnati Electronics.

Joseph M Renaud, State Aerospace and Defence Advisor for the Ohio Department of Development, recently visited L-3 Communications Cincinnati Electronics (L-3 CE) in Mason, Ohio L-3 CE is a first-rank engineering, development and production company engaged in the design, manufacture and marketing of highly sophisticated electronics equipment, which is used in a variety of product areas for government, civil and commercial applications

As an advisor to Governor Robert Taft, Renaud was on site at the Mason facility to meet with Dr James T Wimmers, President of L-3 CE, and members of senior management.

Eager to continue Governor Taft's focus on Ohio's high-tech industrial sector, Renaud received a company briefing from Dr Wimmers detailing the history of the organisation as well as an overview of L-3 CE's success in the aerospace, defence and surveillance industries.

Guiding Renaud through a tour of the Mason facility, Wimmers was careful to point out that all components for L-3 CE's various products are manufactured on site at the Mason facility.

Of particular interest to Renaud is L-3 CE's involvement in programmes funded through the Ohio Department of Development under the Third Frontier Initiative through the University of Dayton and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

John Devitt, Manager of System Analysis and Test, presented Renaud with an overview of L-3 CE's joint efforts with the University of Dayton in the areas of micro-optics and multicolour devices.

In 2002, the State of Ohio launched the Third Frontier Project, which represents the state's largest-ever commitment to expanding its high-tech research capabilities and promoting innovation and company formation to create high paying jobs for generations to come.

The 10-year, $1.1 billion initiative is designed to build world-class research facilities, support early stage capital formation, and the development of new products and finance advanced manufacturing technologies to help existing industries become more productive.

The Third Frontier Project is led by a commission comprised of the Ohio Director of Development, the Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents and the Science and Technology Advisor to the Governor.

The commission is assisted by a 16-member advisory board comprised of leaders from industry, academia and government.

Keenly aware of the advantages for Ohio in the development of intellectual properties such as those of L-3 CE, Renaud emphasised the State's commitment to ensuring that "research is shared and efforts are continued jointly among Ohio's universities, corporations and government agencies".
