Fibre optics are a fast developing communication technology comprising modular components that can provide cost-effective solutions to complex problems.
Lemo connectors form part of the fibre optic network which connects the Hellenic Navy's new distributed data processing units developed by Power Magnetics and Electronics Systems (PMES), a division of Ultra Electronics.
The new SDDS system provides the fleet with an improved, fail-safe system for navigational survival which has the flexibility to route data anywhere in the vessel.
Previously the fleet was reliant on a single cabinet in each ship to store the data which could not be distributed around the vessel.
PMES's latest data processing unit is based on a ruggedised PCI architecture and off the shelf hardware and software which enables the new distributed multiprocessor network.
It is a highly resilient, modular, easy to install distribution system that can easily be extended or upgraded during the lifetime of a vessel.
Conditions in a naval environment can be extremely harsh and challenging, which meant that PMES needed the fibre optic interconnection system to be unquestionably reliable.
Lemo connectors, which are renowned for their quick, reliable mating and unmating, and security against accidental disconnection through vibration and shock, were specified for the contract.
Michael Stembridge, PMES, explains: "We were most impressed by the rugged design of Lemo's fibre optic connectors and chose them as an effective and reliable solution for this demanding naval environment".
The contract for the supply of the new SDDS to the Hellenic Navy began in June 2000 and involves three vessels.
