An HNC course in electronic engineering by open/distance learning is ideally suited to those who are unable to attend college on either a full-time or part-time basis.

There are no time limits placed on commencement or completion of the modules, and students can progress at their own pace.

Thus fitting in with their commitments at home and at work.

The HNC in Electronic Engineering consists of core modules and a number of modules within the principles and technology group and option group.

The core modules group consists of four compulsory units worth five credits.

The core units are: "Information technology applications 2" (1 credit), "Communication: presenting complex communication for vocational purposes" (1 credit), "Fundamentals of quality assurance" (1 credit) and an engineering project (2 credits).

Within the principles and technology group, which consists of seven modules, the student is required to study at least five out of the seven credits.

The principles and technology group modules are: "Engineering principles (electrical)" (1 credit), "Electronic devices" (1 credit), "Analogue circuits" (1 credit), "Combinational logic and circuits" (1 credit), "Sequential logic and circuits" (1 credit), "Engineering principles (electrical networks)" (1 credit) and "Mathematics for engineering" (1 credit).

The student then has two modules to take from a choice of 25 in the options group.

A student needs to obtain 12 credits to obtain a HNC in electronic engineering.

This course is accredited by SQA and on obtaining a HNC the student can be eligible to up to 75% credit transfer towards the first year of a HND in engineering course via an English university (also available by open/distance learning, but with a few formal examinations) or worth 120 points via the degree through the Open University.

The HNC in electronic engineering is a nationally and in many cases an internationally recognised engineering qualification.
