Advanced Microtek, the waveguide manufacturing arm of Link Microtek, has expanded its workforce with the appointment of two new tool makers, John Halls and John O'Neill.

Waveguide products are generally used in high-technology applications such as communications systems.

The precision engineering involved in their production demands traditional tool making skills and experience which is becoming a rare attribute as these skilled craftsmen disappear from the diminishing UK manufacturing industry.

Halls joins Advanced from Prestech, where he had been employed for 5 years as a machine tool maker, working on special-purpose machine tools for the automotive industry.

Prior to that, he was self-employed for 3 years, developing a PA speaker rigging system, and earlier in his career he spent 11 years as a workshop technician with Space Technology Systems.

O'Neill is also a very experienced tool maker, having worked for many years in local engineering firms.

Most recently he was employed by RJL Engineering for 6 years, where he used both CNC and manually operated machines to produce tight-tolerance work for the aerospace industry.

That was preceded by a long spell as a tool maker/machinist with Lansing and Bagnall in Basingstoke, which involved making a wide variety of jigs and fixtures for milling and turning operations.
