Form-in-place gaskets shut out
interference
Altocad is a fully automated form-in-place technology from Laird Technologies that provides large (or small) quantities of EMI gaskets at reasonable cost.

MRI A fabric from Laird Technologies has been specifically engineered and developed for superior shielding performance in magnetic resonance imaging applications.
Form-in-place is an automated system for dispensing conductive elastomer EMI shielding and earthing gaskets on to metallic or plastic substrates.
This system is ideal for mobile phones, mobile basestations, PDAs, PC cards, radios and many other compartmentalised cast or plastic enclosures and packaged electronic assemblies.
Laird Technologies' form-in-place compounds are nontoxic and comprise highly conductive silver plated particles embedded in silicone.

Ten considerations when specifying an RF gasket
Compiling a list of essential requirements is an ideal way to reduce cost and improve the performance of RF gaskets in specific applications says Gary Fenical from Laird Technologies.
Vulcanisation occurs at standard humidity and temperature, taking only a few hours to complete.
The material adheres to most substrates without primer and can be applied to produce an optically and electrically perfect bead.
The programmable three-axis CNC dispensing equipment dispenses the compound on to the substrate with a placement tolerance of +/-0.025mm and gasket cross-sectional tolerances from +/-0.076mm.
The gasket formed in this way will, typically, provide a volume resistivity of 0.05ohm-cm.
The attenuation is typically 92dB at 10MHz.
A wide range of extrusion materials is available and environmental protection is up to IP65.
A secure bond is created during the curing process.
The highly repeatable computer-controlled dispensing ensures consistency between parts and allows rapid part program changes.
All levels of volume are possible - from prototyping to high-volume electronic component production - via the use of single/multiple dispensing heads.
Programming allows application of custom gasket configurations to parts, to form multiple levels on parts, and also on certain nonflat shapes.
The are many benefits of using form-in-place gasketting.
There is a cost saving deriving from reduced raw materials usage, labour and assembly time; the room temperature curing eliminates the need for costly heat curing systems; and single component compounds eliminate the need for mixing ingredients.
Also, the easy-to-program operating system allows for quick part to part changeover, minimal tooling investment for new designs, and prototype development in 24-48 hours.
Moreover, such gaskets provide more critical packaging space for board level components and smaller package sizes.
