Step-up charge pumps cut quiescent
current

Regulated step-up charge pumps save battery run time in portable device applications.

Linear Technology has announced the LTC3221/-3.3/-5 regulated step-up charge pumps offered in the compact 2 x 2mm DFN package Featuring 60mA output current and Burst Mode operation, the LTC3221 family consumes an ultralow quiescent current of 8uA, saving battery run time in portable device applications

The LTC3221 has an adjustable output voltage and a wide input voltage range of 1.8 to 5.5V with a maximum output level not greater than twice the available input voltage.

The LTC3221-3.3 generates a regulated boosted output voltage of 3.3V from a minimum input voltage of 1.8V, and the LTC3221-5 produces a 5V output from a minimum 2.7V input voltage.

The LTC3221 family's combination of low quiescent current and regulated output make them ideal for low power memory backup supplies, automotive sensors, RF transmitters and handheld devices, in addition to general purpose dual AA cell to 3.3V supply or Li-ion/polymer to 5V supply conversion.

The LTC3221/-3.3/-5's high 600kHz switching frequency enables the use of tiny external ceramic capacitors, saving space and cost.

Low external parts count (one flying capacitor and two bypass capacitors on the input and output) and the low-profile DFN package achieves an extremely compact solution for space-constrained applications.

Other features of the LTC3221/-3.3/-5 include load disconnect from the input during shutdown and short-circuit protection.

The LTC3221EDC, LTC3221EDC-3.3 and LTC3203EDC-5 are available in th low-profile 6-lead DFN (2 x 2 x 0.75mm) packages.

Pricing starts at US $1.60 each in 1000-piece quantities. Request a free brochure from Linear Technology Corp ...
