Software simplifies reliable low-power radio
LPRS has developed a solution to the perennial problem of obtaining optimum performance from low-power radio systems.
LPRS has developed a solution to the perennial problem of obtaining optimum performance from low-power radio systems.
Called easy-Radio, the new system will allow OEMs effectively to ignore the radio link, and literally think of low-power radio as a replacement for a length of cable.
The easy-Radio system is based on software which automatically converts the transmitted data to a more efficient "over air" data format and feeds it via the receiver to the user's host processor where it is converted back to its original state.
According to LPRS Technical Manager Robert Jevans: "It is a recurring problem that the optimum datastream for a radio link is inevitably not the optimum for our customers' end applications.
But using easy-Radio we can create this optimum datastream, regardless of the application.
The net result is faster and more reliable reception as well as greater range".
The easy-Radio system is highly adaptable, and is available from LPRS in four different ways, which will suit different applications depending on volumes: as a complete system with the software embedded into the radio modules; as receiver or transmitter RF modules only and easy-Radio on disc for the customer to program; preprogrammed on PIC microcontrollers; or as a software licence.
In each case, the easy-Radio software is completely transparent in use: the user simply inputs data to the transmitter, and receives the same data as output from the receiver.
Says LPRS Managing Director Barry Gillibrand: "If you've ever designed a wireless system from the beginning or even used ready made modules, you'll already know the time and cost involved.
The road from theory to practise is long and difficult.
The component cost which is usually the driving factor becomes incidental compared to the cost of time not to mention the software problems".
"This really is a simple solution to what has become a highly complex and long-running problem.
We believe easy-Radio is going to "unjam" a lot of existing and new applications and get folks to market much faster", says Gillibrand.
Easy-Radio software is available now from Low Power Radio Solutions.
Preprogrammed modules include the AM2000 series, designed and manufactured by LPRS, and the Radiometrix TX2/RX2 transmitter and receiver.
Further devices will be made available during the course of 2001, including further Radiometrix devices and narrowband modules from Circuit Design.
