DECT transceivers provide bullet-proof
telemetry

A new line of embedded DECT modules from Low Power Radio Solutions combines high-speed data transmission with low power consumption in a compact easy to apply package.

A new line of embedded DECT modules from Low Power Radio Solutions combines high-speed data transmission with low power consumption in a compact easy to apply package Developed by Hoft and Wessel, the HW 86010 embedded DECT module combines a radio and baseband assembly which is fully compliant with the Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telephony (DECT) standard with a range of interfaces which make it easy to integrate into any application ranging from high-integrity point-to-point telemetry and wireless data acquisition systems to complex wireless networking for both data and voice

According to LPRS Managing Director Barry Gillibrand: "DECT really is the ideal radio technology for so many applications, combining consumer-goods-proven technology with bullet-proof protocols, and using componentry that benefits from the high volumes of systems already deployed.

Combine this with worldwide approvals (the USA excepted) and you have a technology that can fulfil a whole range of roles that alternatives such as Bluetooth will never satisfy".

The HW 86010 module performs the complete radio and baseband processing of DECT signals, including error-correcting datalink protocols.

Onboard interfaces include RS232 for serial data, a PCM connection for analogue signals or voice, an I2C interface and both analogue and digital I/Os.

Operating in the globally standardised DECT frequency band between 1.88 and 1.9GHz, the module is fully compliant with the EN300175 DECT Common Interface and the ETS300 651 Data Services Standard.

It is also certified to EN301406, EN60950/2000 and ETS301 489-6.

This means that OEMs can be confident in certifying their end equipment to the RTTE Directive.

Thanks to the bullet-proof DECT protocols embedded into the module, and the relative "quietness" of the DECT band, performance is little affected by external factors.

Indeed, the DECT standard even allows for collocated networks without compromising performance.

As a result, designers can be confident that their systems will provide consistent performance, with ranges up to 300m outdoors or 60m in buildings and data transfers in excess of 100Kbit/s.

The compact HW 86010 measures just 52 x 37 x 8mm and weighs only 30g.

Typical maximum current consumption is a battery friendly 150mA.

Full application advice and evaluation kits are available from Low Power Radio Solutions.

A companion device with the same form factor and pinout is available for markets such as the USA where the DECT standard is not accepted. Request a free brochure from Low Power Radio Solutions ...
