Intensity modulators boost extinction
A new family of intensity modulators from Photline Technologies features an extinction ratio superior to 40dB.
Photline Technologies, a supplier of lithium niobate (LiNbO3) based modulation solutions, has released the MXPE-LN series, a family of intensity modulators with extinction ratio superior to 40dB Conventional intensity modulators offer about 20dB of extinction ratio, a sufficient performance for most of fibre communication applications
However, a growing number of applications, more often using light pulses, require an extinction ratio of more than 30dB.
Pulse shaping prior optical amplification, lidar based sensing systems, Brillouin scattering based fibre sensors are just a few examples of applications where MXPE-LN modulators prove themselves as key devices.
The 40dB extinction ratio of MXPE modulators is achieved thanks to the combination of a proprietary waveguide design (patent pending) and of Photline proton exchange waveguide process.
