LSI Logic has expanded its RapidChip Xtreme family of prebuilt slices designed to deliver a low-risk path for building multigigabit serial interface designs.

LSI Logic has expanded its RapidChip Xtreme family of prebuilt slices designed to deliver a low-risk path for building multigigabit serial interface designs, including PCI Express, RapidIO and Serial Attached SCSI The expansion comprises three new slices, the RC11XT410, RC11XT440 and RC11XT555

The new RC11XT410 and RC11XT440 RapidChip Xtreme configurable slices are optimised for PCI Express designs in 4, 8 and 16 lane configurations required for high performance, high-bandwidth communications, storage and computing applications.

The RC11XT410 slice extends the capability of RapidChip Xtreme slices to include I/O support for DDR2 and QDR memories, and the RC11XT440 slice adds additional gate and memory resources to existing slices to accommodate additional customer application requirements and a greater number of single and quad ports.

The RC11XT555 RapidChip Xtreme configurable slice leverages the flexibility of LSI Logic's proven-in-silicon and standards-compliant transceiver technology to support multiple high-speed serial applications required in telecommunications and networking equipment.

Supporting data rates from 100Mbit/s to 3.2Gbit/s, LSI Logic's transceiver technology provides compliant physical interface for standards such as XAUI, serial and parallel RapidIO, Gigabit Ethernet, SPI4.2, SPI-5 and Hypertransport.

"These three unique premanufactured RapidChip Xtreme slices provide faster time-to-market for product developers who want to implement value added high-speed serial interconnect peripherals and bridges while realising the benefits of risk mitigation and affordable NRE costs associated with platform ASIC technology", said Yousef Khalilollahi, Director RapidChip Marketing, LSI Logic.

"We lead the industry in integration with as many as 32 channels of 4.25Gbit/s serdes compliant with multiple interface standards and as many as 5 million usable ASIC gates in one RapidChip Xtreme slice, allowing our customers to design more standards protocols into one slice with significant room left to implement their own custom logic".

The RC11XT410, R11XT440 and RC11XT555 are available for design starts today.

The RapidChip semiconductor platform combines the high-density, high-performance benefits of cell-based ASICs with the fast time-to-market and customisation benefits of FPGAs, and the proven IP benefits of ASSPs.

Targeting the communications, consumer, storage and other markets, RapidChip Platform ASICs use LSI Logic's high-performance field-tested CoreWare IP, customisable logic, embedded memory, and innovative design concepts to significantly reduce design and manufacturing risk and costs.

RapidChip Platform ASICs also provide a fast and seamless migration path to full standard-cell ASIC -- driving unit costs even lower.

Unique to RapidChip Platform ASICs is the customer-friendly interface that dramatically simplifies the underlying complexity of the design tools and flows associated with SoC design.

Rule sets automatically manage architectural design, verification, and physical design.

As a result, design schedules for high- performance chips are very predictable.

Information on RapidChip technology is available through LSI Logic's direct sales channels and worldwide distribution partners.
