LSI Logic has added the Engenio FC4600 4Gbit/s Fibre Channel drive module to the family of disk enclosures offered by its Engenio Storage Group.

LSI Logic has added the Engenio FC4600 4Gbit/s Fibre Channel drive module to the family of disk enclosures offered by its Engenio Storage Group The FC4600 drive module, which can house up to an intermix of 16 FC and/or SATA drives, is designed to optimise utilisation, performance, availability and serviceability and it is offered through the company's worldwide OEM partners

Providing greater density than the current 14-drive enclosure, as well as up to 50% greater density in mixed Fibre Channel and SATA configurations, the new module allows customers to maximise IOPS performance and storage density.

As environmental costs continue to grow, the reduced rack space, power and cooling demands of the FC4600 provide clear benefits, including lower acquisition costs, reduced maintenance expense and lower environmental costs.

"LSI was the first storage vendor to offer a 4Gbit/s FC array and the company continues its leadership position by delivering end-to-end 4Gbit/s technology with the introduction of the new FC4600 drive module", said John Webster, founder and senior analyst, Data Mobility Group.

"Customers are now able to quickly and easily implement complete 4Gbit/s FC solutions throughout their organisations and capitalise on the improved performance, and reduced costs that 4Gbit/s technology offers".

"Since the introduction of the LSI 4Gbit/s FC array in February 2005, customers have been able meet the challenge of moving ever-increasing amounts data by harnessing the power of 4Gbit/s technology".

A configuration with 1Tbyte of performance-optimised Fibre Channel drives and 4Tbyte of capacity-optimised SATA drives can now reside in a single 3U enclosure, saving 50% in rack space and reducing costs as compared with the previous architecture.

Customers using the Engenio 6998 controllers are able to seamlessly integrate the new FC4600 drive modules into existing systems, thus protecting previous investments while leveraging the new capabilities of the new drive module.

"LSI Logic is extending its 4Gbit/s leadership, to deliver the first end-to-end 4Gbit/s storage system", said Steve Gardner, Director of Product Marketing, Engenio Storage Group, LSI Logic.

"The 4Gbit/s infrastructure which consists of HBAs, switches, and storage systems, has been rolled out over the past year; and users have received the cost, performance, and investment protection, benefits they expected".

"The LSI 4Gbit/s drive module announcement completes the solution".

Customers intermixing Fibre Channel and SATA drives are assured of maintaining the highest levels of performance and availability associated with Fibre Channel drive enclosures.

Each SATA drive in the FC4600 includes a SATA interface card, which provides these drives with the dual-link capability and switching functionality needed to achieve redundant I/O paths - a requirement for enterprise-class storage systems.

Additionally, the SATA interface card's speed-matching technology enables the 3Gbit/s SATA drive to function effectively as a 4Gbit/s drive - ensuring the FC4600 drive module achieves maximum performance when intermixed with 4Gbit/s FC and 3Gbit/s SATA II drives.

Embedded "loop switch" technology, which isolates each drive on a private loop with the Environmental Services Module (ESM) allows for more detailed diagnostic information to be gathered, simplifying analysis of drive and loop issues, which results in improving uptime and faster problems resolution.

The FC4600 is also RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substance) compliant, ensuring that it meets the highest environmental standards.
