SCSI technology enters the seventh generation
LSI Logic has announced commercial availability of the LSI53C1030 Ultra320 SCSI controller chip and the start of a worldwide product sampling and demo program featuring LSI Logic's Ultra320 products.
The new MegaRAID adapters are powered by the proven LSI SAS1078 IC, which is a powerful I/O storage engine that transparently performs all data protection, data checking and restoration tasks.
The SAS1078 features a PCI Express host interface enabling the new MegaRAID products to overcome traditional PCI host bus bottlenecks, delivering 1.5Gbyte/s sustained sequential throughput for applications such as high performance data streaming or backup.
Also contributing to the outstanding performance of the new MegaRAID SAS family is its 667MHz cache interface, the fastest in the industry.

The second-generation MegaRAID cards are supported by the MegaRAID Management Suite of software - a complete spectrum of applications and tools including next-generation pre-boot and advanced online RAID management utilities.
This suite of applications features a variety of configuration options and SAS topology views from the system host, controller and disk enclosure down to the logical and physical drive level.
This allows administrators to efficiently configure, monitor and manage RAID volumes locally or over the network.
"Through more than 70,000 hours of testing with all major server OEMs, the LSI SAS core offers unsurpassed interoperability and a proven RAID stack, providing customers a clear advantage when implementing SAS technology", said Steve Gardner, Director of Product Marketing, Engenio Storage Group, LSI Logic.
"Combined with performance that excels in both high I/O transaction and high bandwidth applications, customers can deploy these second-generation MegaRAID adapters with complete confidence".
Product sampling includes the low-profile eight-port internal MegaRAID SAS 8708ELP and low-profile MegaRAID SAS 8888ELP adapters.
With selectable connectors, the 8888ELP serves multiple deployment needs.
Users may select one of three connector configurations: two internal, two external or one of each.
Both products offer 3Gbit/s throughput per port, the ability to intermix SAS and SATA devices in the same array and support of both SAS expanders and SATA native command queuing (NCQ).
Additionally, each adapter provides RAID 6 support to protect against data loss in the event of dual-drive failures.
This is a critical feature in SAS environments where systems are often populated with lower-reliability SATA drives.
The MegaRAID SAS 8708ELP and 8888ELP adapters also offer battery backup options to protect the integrity of cached data.
By providing power in the event of a brief power outage or complete AC power failure, MegaRAID battery backup units provide an inexpensive alternative to using an uninterruptible power supply.
The new MegaRAID adapters will ship in production volume to OEMs and the channel by year-end with pricing comparable to current products.
LSI storage products are supplied to the channel in Europe through distribution partners.
