Demand for equipment to support the testing of the various interfaces supplied by OEMs within the Metropolitan Area Network is on the increase according to Livingston.

Demand for equipment to support the testing of the various interfaces supplied by OEMs within the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is on the increase according to equipment management service specialist Livingston These include equipment to support STM-64 testing at 1310nm, Fiber Channel at both 1 and 2Gbit/s, FICON, ESCON, FDDI, D1 video, Gigabit Ethernet and optical Fast Ethernet (100Mbit/s)

The linking of corporate LANs at high speed is driving the increase of bandwidth demand.

Metro equipment is being deployed to service applications such as direct access into storage area networks (ESCON and FICON) and video on demand (D1).

Andy Walker, Livingston's Marketing Operations Manager, states: "We have invested in a wide range of equipment such as the Digital Lightwave NIC+ unit with Gigabit Ethernet, ConnTech ESCON analysers, Smartbits Fiber Channel solution, Fluke Optiviews, ANT-10G's with 1310nm from Acterna and have just taken delivery of the new MD1230A data quality analyser from Anritsu".

"This is not all new technology, Nortel, for instance, has been testing ESCON for at least the last three years.

However, with investment in long-haul networks being hit by budget cuts, operators see this as one of the areas where they can grow their revenue without too much investment.

They're also hopeful that by generating an increase in traffic they'll start filling up the core network and use this as a lead into the deployment of 40Gbit/s", added Andy Walker.
