An advanced battery charging unit has been designed by Lawtronics to charge up to five portable pumps for a personal air-sampling system.

An advanced battery charging unit has been designed by Lawtronics to charge up to five portable pumps for a personal air-sampling system The battery management specialist was asked by Casella CEL to design and manufacture an intelligent charger for its Vortex environmental monitoring range

"We wanted a rapid charging system that would ensure battery power for our personal air-sampling pumps over a full working shift", said Gordon Preston, product manager at Casella CEL.

"This meant we needed a charger specialist who was experienced in designing custom electronics".

Lawtronics' experience as a pioneer in intelligent charger technology helped it to develop the multiway unit, which is designed for mounting in a 19in rack.

"Although the charger design was non-standard", explained Lawtronics' technical manager, David Winnett, "we were quickly able to produce a unit that met all Casella's requirements".

The two companies worked closely on the design brief, which resulted in a unique customised design not available off the shelf.

The charger monitors the individual condition of each of the 12V NiCd batteries and is capable of fast charging a fully discharged battery in three hours.

Once the battery is fully charged, the unit automatically switches to trickle charge, maintaining the pump in a ready condition.

Up to eight units can be housed in an enclosure, providing a total charging and storage facility for 40 pumps.
