RTOS puts Pentium to safety-critical

The LynxOS-178 real-time operating system becomes the first-ever commercial-off-the-shelf RTOS to support Intel's Pentium architecture in safety-critical systems.
In a move unprecedented in the embedded systems market, LynuxWorks has announced that its LynxOS-178 real-time operating system (RTOS) is the first-ever commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) RTOS to support Intel's Pentium architecture in safety-critical systems In addition, LynxOS-178 2.2 also provides an enhanced capacity for communication across separate devices using different operating systems and includes expanded memory support that enables developers of military and aerospace systems to take full advantage of today's more powerful hardware

LynxOS-178 2.2 also includes support for distributed communications middleware products such as Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) or Distributed Data Systems (DDS).
This architecture allows multiple heterogeneous devices to communicate seamlessly enabling designers to simplify development of distributed systems.
LynuxWorks also has expanded memory support in LynxOS-178, allowing developers to fully exploit the power of today's latest hardware designs.
Other new features in LynxOS-178 2.2 work together toward expanded functional usability for further improvements in time to market for safety-critical development applications.
The military and aerospace industry mandates rigorous technical and process requirements for safety-critical computing.
In the USA, these are expressed in the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) DO-178B standard for the production of software for airborne systems.
The targeted DO-178B certification level is either A (catastrophic), B (hazardous/severe), C (major), D (minor) or E (no effect).
LynxOS-178 2.2 fully satisfies the objectives of the DO-178B level A specification, providing a low-risk path to DO-178B certification for developers to meet the technical requirements in the production of software for airborne systems.
The availability of LynxOS-178B 2.2 allows developers to leverage software and artifacts that have been certified previously.
In the end, LynxOS-178 2.2 provides high value to developers by enabling the rapid time to market delivery of safety-critical applications.

In addition to the LynxOS-178B 2.2 kernel, the offering will include a complete artifacts package for the kernel and user library, DO-178B required documentation, code coverage test suites and analysis for 100-percent modified condition/decision coverage of the kernel and libraries, a full suite of standards-based development tools and support.
