Matsushita Electric Works has introduced the AXA2 memory card socket, designed to withstand insertion and removal in excess of 10,000 times.

The global market is growing rapidly for Flash memory and SDRAM removable memory cards, rather than board to board chips In response to this Matsushita Electric Works has introduced the AXA2 socket designed to withstand insertion and removal in excess of 10,000 times, and featuring a soft "click" insertion mechanism

These sockets can be used for any application requiring an SD RAM card or multimedia card such as digital music players and cameras, PDAs, video cameras, cellular phones and other digital consumer electronics products.

Porosity treatment is a process developed by Matsushita that covers pinholes in the gold plating on the contacts with an extremely thin film.

This process improves resistance to corrosion and insertion/release durability by protecting the plating underneath.

As a result of this treatment, contact resistance is equivalent to a gold plating thickness of 0.7 microns even though the actual thickness is only 0.2 microns.

The standard mounting type has a profile of only 3.0mm and eject detection is available by special order.

The reverse mounting type has the lowest profile in its class at only 2.65mm and also boasts the smallest PC board mounting area.

It also has a simple card lock for improved control.

Memory cards are very sensitive to static build up.

To prevent damage, the socket has electrostatic shielding which effectively earths the card on insertion and removal.

This shielding is common to both standard and reverse mounting types.
