Matsushita Electric Works (MEW) is developing a new range of 42V relays to meet the changing demands of the automotive industry as it heads towards the introduction of 42V control systems MEW is working hand-in-hand with vehicle manufacturers to develop this new breed of relay, and the relays are already being used in the field in the Toyota Crown in Japan

Relay gives impressive performance for its size

Five different mounting options on auto relays
Now available with five different mounting options, the high performance range of CB mini ISO standard cube relays has been developed in response to OEM and automotive system manufacturers
MEW also has a range of PMOS semiconductor relays and switches suitable for use in 42V systems.
MEW's 42V relays are currently produced in 30 and 100A versions, with a 10A type that will be available shortly.
The 100A 42V relay is a fully sealed, panel mounted relay with a maximum interception current of 400A at 55V DC and has achieved a 1000A at 100V DC break in air.
This sturdy device fully encapsulates any arcing.
Contact design and a magnetic blowout system means that the contacts have excellent operational life characteristics, as any arcing is pulled out on to the rim surrounding the contact pad, thus reducing damage to the contacts and quickly extinguishing the arc.
The encapsulated relay design also means that clearance needed to accommodate arcing can be greatly reduced.
The 100A relay has been adapted from MEW's electrical vehicle contactor, the EV relay, which is designed to switch much higher voltages.
Both the 30 and 10A types have been modelled on the mini ISO type of relays.
The 30A 42V DC relay has also been designed with a magnetic arc extinguishing construction and this has enabled the device to achieve a break time of just 5ms.
The 10A 42V DC version has been designed with twin contacts, which allow the contact gap to be effectively double by connecting the two contacts in series.
This enables a small sized relay to break a high voltage.
This relay is capable of 100,000 operations with a 10A motor load.
