Ultracapacitor cells and multicell packs provide high-performance "life-of-the system" alternatives to batteries for a wide range of industrial and transportation applications.

Maxwell Technologies has introduced further Boostcap Energy- and Power-type "C-cell" ultracapacitor cells and multicell packs to provide high-performance "life-of-the system" alternatives to batteries for a wide range of industrial and transportation applications Dr Richard Balanson, Maxwell's President and Chief Executive Officer, said that the new 2.5V cells have the same external dimensions but weigh just one-third as much as the familiar C-size battery, and are designed for easy mounting on printed circuit boards and in other electrical devices and systems

Representative applications include industrial robotics, actuators, telecommunications power buffering and backup, aircraft door and air bag actuation, distributed power nodes for automotive subsystems and solar energy system augmentation.

"Global demand for ultracapacitor-based energy storage and power delivery solutions is growing rapidly, and we are committed to providing the industry's most complete single and multicell product portfolio", Balanson said.

"The new C-cell is the only product of its size and capacitance that is hermetically sealed through a double seaming process to ensure long life and reliability".

Michael Everett, Maxwell's Vice President and Chief Technical Officer, said the 120F BCAP0120 P250 Power-type C-cell is engineered specifically for high-cycling applications that require the lowest equivalent series resistance (ESR) and highest efficiency, whereas the 140F BCAP0140 E250 Energy version is designed to provide more economical solutions for lighter duty applications.

Each also is available in a fully integrated six-cell, 15V, pack.

Other recently introduced Boostcap ultracapacitor products include cells ranging in capacitance from 320 to 2600F and more than 20 fully integrated packs and modules based on the new cells.

All the cells with a capacitance of 650F or greater operate at 2.7V, enabling them to store more energy and deliver more power per unit volume than any other commercially available ultracapacitor products.

"All of these products meet or exceed demanding transportation and industrial application requirements for both watt-hours of energy storage and watts of power delivery per kilogram and will perform reliably for more than one million discharge-recharge cycles", Everett said.

"The proprietary architecture and material science on which these products are based also significantly reduce manufacturing cost, positioning Maxwell to compete favourably with batteries and other energy storage technologies".
