The MAX1566 and MAX1567 are complete high-efficiency power-supply solutions for digital still cameras and digital video cameras.

The MAX1566 and MAX1567 are complete high-efficiency power-supply solutions for digital still cameras and digital video cameras Housed in 40-pin, 6 x 6mm thin QFN packages, these devices are 56% smaller than competing multichannel controller solutions

To save board space and cost, these devices eliminate external components such as diodes, external power switches, resistors, and capacitors.

The MAX1566/MAX1567 combine high-efficiency DC/DC convertors with synchronous rectifiers to provide a 95% efficient conversion for the main supply (3.3V typical), system supply (5V typical), and core supply (1.5 or 1.8V typical).

Because these supplies deliver 60% of the total camera power, efficiency is critical.

The main supply can be configured as either a step-up or step-down DC/DC convertor.

Three controllers supply power for the white LED backlight module, positive and negative CCD biases, and positive and negative LCD biases.

On the MAX1567, AUX2 is an inverting DC/DC controller that generates negative outputs without a transformer.

All DC/DC channels operate at one fixed frequency, which can be set from 100kHz to 1MHz to optimise size, cost, and efficiency.

The input voltage range is 0.7 to 5.5V, and is intended for single-cell lithium-ion (Li+) and two- or three-cell alkaline battery inputs.

The MAX1566 and MAX1567 are screened for the extended industrial temperature range (-40 to +85C).

Prices start at $2.90 (1000-up, FOB USA).

Evaluation kits are available to speed designs.
