Drivers produce more light from fewer
LEDs
The MAX8595 and MAX8596 are 36V step-up DC/DC convertors that power up to eight LEDs in a series at 25mA.

Speedy DAC claims dynamic superiority for comms
The MAX5195 is a 14bit 260Msample/s DAC claimed to provide the world's best dynamic performance in spurious-free dynamic range, intermodulation distortion and signal to noise ratio.
Low-power serial ADC runs up to 200Ksample/s
New from Maxim Integrated Products, the MAX1162 serial-interface 16bit A/D convertor connects directly to SPI, QSPI and Microwire devices without additional interface logic.
In noncompensated designs, users have to limit the LED current at room temperature - and therefore use more LEDs to get the desired brightness - to a level low enough to ensure safety at higher temperatures.
With the MAX8596, the LED current reduces automatically at higher temperatures.
Consequently, the user can safely run higher currents at room temperature and use up to 33% fewer LEDs, saving cost and space.
Fast 1MHz, current-mode PWM operation allows for a small inductor and output capacitor while minimising ripple on the input supply/battery.
Efficiency is a high 86%, and the input voltage range is 2.6 to 5.5V.
Whereas competing products require two resistors and a capacitor to adjust brightness, the MAX8595 and MAX8596 provide flexible dimming control with an analogue or digital PWM input without additional components.
Other DC/DC convertor features include internal soft-start to reduce inrush current, low input ripple, and a 0.3uA shutdown current to maximise battery life.
Both devices are available in space-saving 3 x 3mm, 8-pin TDFN packages screened for the -40 to +85C temperature range.
The devices are pin-to-pin compatible with the popular MAX1561 and MAX1599.
Prices start at $1.45 (1000-up, FOB USA).
To speed designs, the MAX1561EVKIT (evaluation kit) can be used to evaluate both devices.
