Static control takes the kinks out of LCD repairs

Thanks to a successful collaboration between static control expert Meech International and Clarion Design, a specialist provider of LCD repair equipment, the market for laptop repair is now available to a wider range of companies.

One of the most common faults with laptops is that the front polariser film becomes scratched and needs to be replaced.

Previously, due to the nature of the technique and the amount of static generated, the replacement process needed to take place in a very expensive cleanroom with blanket ionisation.

This put the repair beyond the budget of most small repair companies.

Now, by using Meech's static control expertise, Clarion Design can offer its range of laminating machines complete with integral DC ionisation bars and blow guns, making it possible for them to operate in a softwall cleanroom.

This significantly reduces overheads but still works to control static generation and allows the successful repair of LCD polariser films.

In the lamination process, there are two main sources of static.

First, static is generated when the polariser film backing sheet is removed to expose the adhesive and then further charge build up occurs when the LCD glass is cleaned.

In both cases, the static attracts dust particles from the environment and any particles trapped between the new film and the glass creates bubbles and results in a reject repair.

By installing the Meech Model 241 DC ion bar on the equipment above the separation process, static is neutralised.

The Model 241 has been specifically designed for the cleanroom and electronic industries and provides powerful long range ionisation.

Its unique "teardrop" profile minimises air turbulence and it also eliminates dust traps, a problem often encountered with similar equipment.

Meech engineers worked alongside Clarion personnel and customised the product to optimise installation and operator ergonomics.

On the Clarion laminating equipment, the bar is powered by a Meech Model 233 pulsed DC controller.

Also added to the system is the Meech 251 blowgun.

This is lightweight, ergonomically design and is used to ensure the glass is dust free before the polarising film is applied.

"By installing the Meech static control ioniser system on our machines, we can ensure maximum effectiveness and our customers can achieve better repair yields throughout their polarisation replacement process", says Malcolm Crook, a Company Director at Clarion Design.

"We have also been able to increase our customer base by introducing smaller companies to the LCD repair business".
