Mentor Graphics has announced the details of its 2001-2002 Higher Education Programme student design contest, cosponsored by Sun Microsystems.

The contest is designed to promote innovation and excellence in education for engineering students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

"Mentor Graphics founded the Higher Education Programme in 1985 on the belief that the continued success of the electronics industry is dependent upon highly skilled engineers", said Julie Schroeder, Manager, Marketing Programs, World Trade Organization, Mentor Graphics.

"For our customers to succeed in the highly competitive global marketplace, they not only need the most advanced design technologies but the engineers who have the necessary training to lead them into the next generation of innovation".

This year's contest will reward the most innovative design project in each of four technology categories; printed circuit board design, IC/analogue mixed signal design, HDL design and system-on-chip design.

All categories will be judged for the most complete and innovative design project created by a student or team of students who are enrolled in VLSI classes during the 2001-2002 school year at a university participating in any of the Mentor Graphics Worldwide Higher Education Programmes.

Cash prizes will be awarded in the amount of US $2000 per category and US $5000 for the grand prize winner.

The contest is open to any full-time undergraduate or graduate student who attends a college or university participating in Mentor Graphics Worldwide Higher Education Programmes.

Entries are due by 31st May 2002, and winners will be announced in August 2002.
