Smart route to lead-free hand soldering
Switching to lead-free hand soldering need not demand new soldering equipment or processes thanks to an established iron technology from Metcal.
The hidden costs of hand soldering
Today's electronics manufacturing and rework place tight demands on the humble soldering iron.
The Metcal MX-500 soldering, desoldering and rework system has long been the industry benchmark against which other soldering, desoldering and rework systems are measured.
Fast, flexible and powerful, the MX-500 soldering, desoldering and rework system raises benchtop conduction soldering to a new level of process control, productivity and throughput.
To accommodate any discrete or SO symmetrical component, the Talon tweezers are supplied with a range of tip cartridge attachments.

Fresh look at optical inspection
The VPI-1000 optical inspection system is new, from the ground up, adding features and flexibility to traditional optical inspection while offering customers an economical inspection solution.
Moreover, the ingenious shape and design of the tips make them multipurpose.
By rotating the Talon tweezers, a single tip cartridge can remove, for instance, a 28-pin SOIC, a tantalum or a 603 chip capacitor, without the operator having to change tips.
Even when the tip cartridge does need to be changed, this is a simple and fast procedure, as there are no screws to remove or difficult alignment procedures, thus reducing system downtime.
Metcal's MX-500 soldering, desoldering and rework system handles both SMT and through-hole soldering/rework with one power supply at the bench.
With two switchable outputs, the system can be adapted to suit your particular needs, using two of the three tools available (soldering iron, Talon tweezers, desolder gun) to configure the most powerful benchtop soldering, desoldering and rework system currently available.
The system also has an automatic shutoff, which helps to maximise tip cartridge life, and a standard four-year warranty.
Unlike traditional electric soldering irons, the MX-500 soldering, desoldering and rework system exploits Metcal's SmartHeat technology for direct power on demand (SmartHeat maintains a constant soldering tip temperature by automatically varying the amount of power supplied to it in relation to thermal soldering load).
Yet, despite its capacity to work at lower, safer temperatures, SmartHeat still delivers the fastest temperature recovery, joint-to-joint, in the industry (particularly advantageous when soldering/reworking lead-free devices).
This ensures unparalleled process control, safety and productivity.
It also dramatically reduces the rate at which soldering tips have to be replaced due to tip wear.
