Micrel has brought its new 0.6-micron ASSET-2 high-speed silicon germanium (SiGe) fabrication process online, giving it the necessary technology to move into the 10Gbit/s communication space.

Micrel has brought its new 0.6-micron ASSET-2 high-speed silicon germanium (SiGe) fabrication process online, giving it the necessary technology to move into the 10Gbit/s communication space Micrel's new GigaPro product line will address high-speed applications with data rates in excess of 10Gbit/s

The new process will yield products offering a three-to-four-fold improvement in bandwidth over the company's current bipolar process.

Devices using this process meet the wide-bandwidth, low jitter and skew requirements of Sonet OC-48 to OC-192 systems, 10/100-Gigabit Ethernet, and 2X Fibre Channel systems.

Micrel is currently beta-sampling its first product from the GigaPro family, a 10Gbit/s buffer/receiver.

The SY58016 differential CML buffer is scheduled for production release in Q1 2002.

Key features for this buffer include a -3dB bandwidth above 7GHz, 45ps maximum rise/fall time, less than 1.5ps RMS jitter, and internal 50ohm termination.

"Micrel has always been a technology rich semiconductor company.

The addition of our new SiGe process is another indication of Micrel's commitment to provide advanced process technologies in-house, in support of its best-of-class products", said Ray Zinn, President and CEO.

The SY58016 is available in a 16-pin (3 x 3mm) MLF package or die form.

Operation is guaranteed from a 3.3V +/-10% power supply over the -40 to +85C industrial temperature range.

Pricing is approximately $17.26 (10,000-off).
