High-sensitivity RF receiver for 380 to 450MHz operation is claimed to lead the industry in distance performance.

New from Micrel, the MICRF211 QwikRadio RF receiver is a 3V high-sensitivity ASK/OOK device for 380 to 450MHz operation With its combination of enhanced sensitivity and selectivity, the MICRF211 now leads the industry in distance performance

The device is aimed at meeting the stringent cost and design cycle needs of rapidly growing RF applications including telemetry, wireless sensing, environmental monitoring, consumer entertainment remotes, remote actuation and lighting control, remote keyless entry (RKE) and TPMS.

The IC is currently available in volume, with pricing starting at US $1.89 for 1000-piece quantities.

"While the market for RF products has literally exploded in the past few years, two barriers have long persisted", says John Lee, Micrel's Director of Mixed-Signal and RF Products.

"The manufacturing cost and skill set design expertise normally required to implement RF technology has been prohibitive for many manufacturers".

"The MICRF211 reinforces Micrel's market position as a global leader in the subgigahertz CMOS RF arena by offering the industry's highest integration, lowest external components and easiest to use solutions".

The device, with its world class performance, and reliable and easy-to-implement design, is particularly suited for the explosive remote actuation market including garage door openers, security gates, MP3 remote control, remote actuation for lighting, power switches, windows and blinds as well as remote keyless entry, car and security alarms, high-end toys, remote water sprinkler systems, moisture sensors, temperature sensors, TV/multimedia entertainment systems and tyre pressure monitoring systems.

The MICRF211 features high sensitivity, good selectivity (330kHz typical IF bandwidth at 433.92MHz) and image rejection that improves communication distance.

The device also offers the highest level of integration with only eight external components required.

The IC's IF section is integrated with the image rejection mixer, has an operating voltage range of 3.0 to 3.6V, and a wide operating temperature of -40 to +105C.

Other features include a squelch function for data output noise suppression that minimises interrupt services request to the MCU and analogue RSSI output that provides the receiver systems with the strength of the received signal.
