Low noise regulators offer best of both
worlds
Novel power devices combine the advantages and ease of use of LDOs with low noise, high PSRR, ultrafast transient performance and the efficiency of a switching regulator.
A new family of SuperLNR low noise regulators are claimed to combine the advantages and ease of use of LDOs with low noise, high PSRR, ultrafast transient performance and the efficiency of a switching regulator Micrel's SuperLNR family combines the "good" characteristics of both linear regulators and DC/DC convertors to produce a new generation of easy-to-use low noise regulators

World's simplest buck regulator boosted to 2A
Micrel has boosted the output capability of the industry's simplest surface-mount DC/DC switching convertor to 2A while retaining the device's original SO-8 packaging.
Dual and triple 135MHz low-power op amps
Consuming just 2.4mA per op amp, the MIC915 dual and MIC916 triple op amps extend Micrel's premier family of high-speed, low-power op amps for power-sensitive high-speed applications.
The MIC38300, the first device in this family, is a 3A voltage regulator housed in a tiny 4 x 6mm MLF package that produces less than 5mV of output noise and 70dB of PSRR.
Industry-leading ultrafast dynamic performance also allows the MIC38300 to maintaining less than 30mV of output voltage deviation even during fast load transients.
The IC is targeted at applications that need an easy upgrade from LDOs as power dissipation becomes an issue or where low-noise performance, small sise and fast transient performance are paramount.
Target markets include point-of-load and digital IC power regulators for networking, servers, wireless basestations, industrial and RF applications.
The IC is available in sample quantities with pricing starting at US $3.95 for 1000-unit quantities.
"As supply voltages continue to move lower, the output noise and transient response associated with a switching regulator poses a significant challenge for engineers", says Ralf Muenster, Micrel's Marketing Director for Power Products.
"The MIC38300 creates the perfect low noise power supply for voltage sensitive point-of-load applications while combining the efficiency of a switcher with ease of use, transient performance and the low noise of an LDO - all resulting in an extremely small solution sise that fits into the footprint of an LDO".
The MIC38300 features an input voltage range of 3.0 to 5.5V and adjustable output voltages as low as 1V.
The solution requires no external inductor and fits into a total solution footprint of less than 40mm2.
The MIC38300 has a junction operating range from -40 to +125C.
