Device combines two ultrafast-transient-performance high-efficiency 4MHz 500mA synchronous buck regulators in a tiny 2 x 2mm MLF package.

New from Micrel, the MIC23050/1 combines two ultrafast-transient-performance high-efficiency 4MHz 500mA synchronous buck (step-down) regulators in a tiny 2 x 2mm MLF package These devices use a novel and patented switching scheme that offer best-in-class light load efficiency and industry-leading transient performance

The devices use the smallest inductors in their class and provide very low output ripple at all loads.

The unique combination of features makes these devices the perfect choice for today's portable applications where high efficiency, fast dynamic response, low output noise and a small solution size are critical.

Target applications include cellular phones, portable media players, GPS systems, WiMAX modules, digital still and video cameras and USB peripherals.

The MIC23050 is available in volume with pricing starting at US $1.20 for 1000-unit quantities and the MIC23051 starts at $1.30.

"Designing a step down regulator for portable applications that can achieve over 85% efficiency at 1mA while providing the smallest inductor size in its class is a challenging task", says Ralf Muenster, Micrel's Director of Marketing for Power Products.

"Micrel's latest generation family of DC/DC convertors, featuring Hyper Light Load, achieves this goal while offering best-in-class transient performance and low ripple across all loads allowing for the smallest output capacitors".

The MIC23050/51 offers an input voltage range of 2.7 to 5.5V, preset output voltage options from 0.6 to 2.5V, and a low quiescent current of only 20uA.

The MIC23051 also features voltage scaling where an active signal can dynamically lower the output voltage reducing the sleep mode power draw by the circuit being powered, saving even more power and increasing standby time of portable applications.

The MIC23050 and 51 are available in tiny 8-pin 2 x 2mm MLFs with a junction operating range from -40 to +125 C.
