Motion-control specialist Micromech has introduced a high-quality range of inline torque limiter couplings for use with stepper motor, servo motor, and gearbox transmission applications Micromech's Technical Director Stirling Morley warns that peak-servo/stepper motor torque transmitted through high-ratio reduction gearing can cause damage to expensive planetary gearheads and other equipment on the load-side

Using the Torque-Limiter range of couplings can prevent this by setting the maximum torque capability of the coupling within the working limits of the weakest link in the transmission system.

Micromech claims these robust TL couplings which have torque ranges from 2 to 1500Nm and bore sizes from 4 to73mm, also enable designers to avoid having to specify oversized more costly components to accommodate peak torque events which usually occur only in emergency situations on the machine.

Four versions are available: the single-position re-engagement where after an overload has been removed the coupling can be re-engaged precisely 360 degree's from the original disengagement position, a load holding version where in the event of overload the drive and driven face are not separated or are allowed only limited rotation, the multi-position coupling that re-engages in the very next position, and finally the free-wheeling version that permanently separates when the transmission overloads.
