Quality of service is key to Gigabit Ethernet ICs
The MVTX2800 family of Gigabit Ethernet switching ICs from Zarlink Semiconductor deliver full-wire speed forwarding and leading quality of service features to metropolitan optical access equipment.
Zarlink's ZL40162/166 chips are dual-matched voltage-feedback amplifiers with large output drive currents - typically more than 200mA.
The chips also display exceptional ratings for linearity, power consumption, and surge protection, making them well suited for driving broadband signals in DSL (digital subscriber line) modems and video equipment.
"DSL modems, commercial video systems, and professional video equipment require operational amplifiers that deliver a challenging mix of high-performance capabilities", said Peter Minett, Product Line Marketing Manager, High-Performance Analog Group, Zarlink Semiconductor.

Ultra-low-power process aims for low-voltage SoCs
Zarlink Semiconductor has expanded its foundry services with a new ultra-low-power analogue nonvolatile 0.35-micron CMOS process optimised for low-voltage (1V) and low-power applications.
"Our ZL40162/66 devices meet this need by providing industry-leading combinations of drive, linearity, and bandwidth".
Both Zarlink's new amps are built in the company's world-class HJV (high-performance, process version J, high-voltage) process, a complementary silicon bipolar technology that maximises performance in high-voltage, high-speed analogue devices.
The ZL40162 amp is optimised for line-driver circuitry in DSL modems.
The ZL40166 amp is designed for video amplification circuits in high-quality video equipment.
Both devices are also suitable for other types of signal conditioning circuits, including active filters, group delays and ADCs.
Zarlink's ZL40162/166 devices are high-voltage, high-speed operational amplifiers with peak-to-peak output drives of up to 9.4V in circuits with single-ended outputs, and up to 18.8V in circuits with differential outputs.
The amps have slew rates, or operating signal edge speeds, of 195V/us.
The chips employ innovative circuit techniques to minimise current consumption.
In standby mode, they draw only 7mA/A - the industry's leading rating in this high-performance category of voltage-feedback amp.
The ZL40162/166 devices deliver excellent combinations of gain and bandwidth, allowing designers to build highly linear, closed loop amplification circuits.
In closed loop configurations with a gain of 2, while driving a 25ohm load, the ZL40162/166 achieve bandwidths of 160 and 190MHz, respectively.
The chips also post best-in-class ratings in three key ratios that measure their ability to minimise distortion, noise, and coupling - the MTPR (multitone power ratio), CMRR (common mode rejection ratio), and PSRR (power supply rejection ratio).
This makes them highly suitable for multiple-carrier transmission systems such as DSL modems.
The MTPR rating is -70dBC when the chips are delivering +13dBm into a 1:2 transformer driving a 100ohm balanced telephone line.
At 10kHz, the CMRR and PSRR of the chips are 79 and 81dB, respectively.
The ZL40162/166 amps also have excellent margins for differential gain and phase, important characteristics for applications in high-grade video equipment.
The ratings of the ZL40166 device exceed requirements for broadcast-quality systems.
In a closed loop with a gain of 2, the differential gain of the ZL40166 is only 0.005%, the lowest in its class.
In the same configuration, the differential phase of the ZL40166 amp is -0.07 degrees.
Zarlink's new analogue amps have robust stress and surge tolerance.
Supply and output pins withstand more than 4kV of ESD, and input pins more than 1.2kV.
All pins pass the JEDEC latch-up test of +/-100mA for 100ms.
This surge-tolerant performance saves designers board space by minimising the need for external protection components.
Zarlink's ZL40162/66 amps are now in production.
The chips are offered in standard, 8-pin SOIC packages, and supported by the ZLE40005 evaluation board.
In 1000 quantities, the ZL40162/166 are priced at US$2.30.
