Zarlink's industry-leading QPSK demodulator for digital satellite TV systems is now available as a fully tested bare die product, or KGD (known good die).

Zarlink's industry-leading QPSK demodulator for digital satellite TV systems is now available as a fully tested bare die product, or KGD (known good die) Introduced in August 2004, the ZL10313 chip remains available as a fully packaged product

Engineers designing complex consumer media systems face the challenge of incorporating increasingly advanced features into reduced spaces, with aggressive cost and time-to-market restrictions.

By supplying the ZL10313 demodulator in KGD form, Zarlink is increasing the packaging options for system and subsystem designers, while continuing to deliver maximum functionality in leading-edge designs.

Bare die are ideally suited for use in high-density designs, such as MCMs (multichip modules) in combined satellite tuners/demodulator front-ends.

The unpackaged die provide designers with higher levels of integration, while reducing the weight and height of components.

"Offering a range of packaging options significantly expands our customers' design flexibility", said Bob Ferreira, DTV Front-End Product Line Director, Zarlink Semiconductor.

"With our ZL10313 device in KGD form, module and packaged IC vendors can more easily design new levels of integration to their products".

Zarlink's ZL10313 packaged chip and tested bare die are targeted at set top boxes that receive DVB-S "free-to-air" and subscriber-based satellite broadcasts, as well as DSS-compliant broadcasts.

The demodulator delivers strong performance from 1 to 45Msymbol/s, and is suitable for both pay-TV and free-to-air applications.

The ZL10313 device consumes less than 300mW of power in typical applications.

It is optimised for design into an MCM, where total power dissipation limits may prevent the use of more power-hungry alternatives.

The device features a "sleep" pin that reduces its power requirement 1000-fold when the STB is not in use, assisting manufacturers in meeting US Environmental Protection Agency Energy Star requirements.

The chip also complies fully with European DVB-S power specifications.

The ZL10313 chip in KGD form maintains the key performance features of its packaged counterpart, including superior "blind scan" capability that allows STB owners to scan the complete range of available television channels at high speed with minimal intervention.

The ZL10313 bare die directly interfaces with all common MPEG decoders and back-end STB processors, and is ideal for use in higher-end combination products such as dual-capacity satellite/terrestrial STBs.

Zarlink's ZL10313 demodulator in KGD form is available now in production quantities.

In 50,000 volumes, it is priced at US $1.80 each, and is supported by an evaluation kit and a full set of proven software drivers.
