MIPS Technologies and Tality Corp have signed an agreement that will give embedded design engineers using MIPS-based technology access to Tality's expert SoC design capability and complementary intellectual property The agreement, which complements MIPS Technologies' own strategic services capability, should lower product development costs of MIPS-based solutions and speed time to market for semiconductor manufacturers and system OEMs that license MIPS products

Under terms of the agreement, the companies will deploy a common design methodology for SoC integration of MIPS cores and develop a roadmap for application platforms based on the MIPS32 4K family of 32bit cores and the MIPS64 5K family of 64bit cores.

Tality, the world's largest engineering services company, will offer front-end design, integration, verification, core hardening and complete turnkey application platforms incorporating hardware and software elements.

The company has begun development of bridge modules from the MIPS cores to an on-chip bus, support modules for the bus, and is enhancing its SoC verification environment to support MIPS-based systems.

In addition, Tality has begun development of a Bluetooth application platform based on the MIPS32 4K family.

"Application platforms address a critical problem in the semiconductor industry, where increasingly complex architectures for SoC designs are consuming valuable engineering resources", said Ajay Shingal, vice president and general manager of the Digital IC Services group at Tality.

"This is especially true in the communications arena.

Design outsourcing has become very attractive to many manufacturers, largely because of the complexities of communication systems and the need to deploy applications in a timely manner.

Our wide range of services will enable MIPS customers to get the most out of their processor cores, whether it's a synthesisable or hardened core, an SoC application platform or any other service that helps them bring their product to market".

"MIPS Technologies maintains its leadership and competitive edge in embedded electronics by focusing on our core expertise providing leading 32 and 64bit licensable microprocessor technologies", said Derek Meyer, vice president of worldwide field operations at MIPS Technologies.

"We complement our product portfolio and maximise value for our customers by partnering with companies that offer a high degree of systems-level integration knowhow.

Tality offers expertise in all aspects of electronic product design and knows what it takes to help manufacturers bring better products to market faster.

For our customers who choose to outsource product development, Tality's world-class design experience will help them realise enormous productivity and time-to-market benefits".
