Texas Instruments has taken a license for MIPS Technologies' next-generation 32bit core, the MIPS32 4KEc synthesisable core.

Texas Instruments has taken a license for MIPS Technologies' next-generation 32bit core, the MIPS32 4KEc synthesisable core TI is using the 4KEc core, which, at 1.4 Dhrystone MIPS/MHz, claims the highest performance available in a 32bit synthesisable core, for broadband solutions which TI will integrate with its DSP technology

TI has been a MIPS Technologies customer since 1999, when it became the first company to take a license for MIPS 32 and 64bit cores.

It used the MIPS32 4Kc core in several products for DSL and cable broadband applications, and in multiple ASIC designs.

Now, TI will use the new 4KEc core as part of its integrated silicon and software data and voice chipset solutions for asymmetrical DSL (ADSL), cable and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) broadband products.

The end result will be home routers, integrated access devices and voice-over-broadband gateways that allow consumers to network multiple Internet accounts and access entertainment and business services such as streaming audio/visual, real-time video conferencing and virtual private network security.

"By integrating the MIPS32 4KEc core with TI's DSP and analogue technology, TI provides a high level of performance, flexibility and development support that will enable our customers to build outstanding new products", said Joseph Crupi, vice president of TI's broadband communications group.

"We are looking forward to working with MIPS as we expand our broadband product offerings and continue to rapidly grow our business in this important market".

"The combination of MIPS' powerful IP with TI's industry-leading DSP technology will result in world-class products", said Derek Meyer, vice president of worldwide field operations at MIPS Technologies.

"We are pleased to have this partnership and look forward to the mutual success we both envision".
