Award for Bourgoin

MIPS Technologies Chairman, President and CEO John Bourgoin has received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne (UIUC).
The ECE Department, which is currently ranked among the top three ECE departments in the USA, recognised Bourgoin for his leadership in the field of high-performance microprocessors.
He earned his BSEE degree from UIUC in 1968.
Bourgoin has more than 30 years of experience in the semiconductor industry, including engineering and management positions at AMD and Motorola.
He was Senior Vice President of Silicon Graphics, and President of the MIPS Group of SGI, before taking the helm of MIPS Technologies when it was spun off from SGI in 1998.
Earlier this year, as keynote speaker at Embedded Processor Forum, the annual conference for developers of embedded microprocessors, Bourgoin offered his vision of the future of embedded electronics, one that addresses the needs of a marketplace with an insatiable appetite for increasingly sophisticated electronic products.
For SoC designers, who must create ever more complex devices and quickly deliver them to a market that is unforgiving and makes profit margins more elusive, the solution, Bourgoin believes, is higher performance, more programmable microprocessor cores.
