The innovation and "out-of-box" thinking exhibited by Israeli semiconductor and OEM companies comes as no surprise to many.

The innovation and "out-of-box" thinking exhibited by Israeli semiconductor and OEM companies comes as no surprise to many Although MIPS Technologies has had an office within Israel for only three years, leading companies in the digital consumer and networking market have already used the MIPS architecture in remarkable ways and MIPS-based products designed by Israel engineering teams are shipping the world over

Notable highlights of MIPS-based innovation within Israel include: the first implementation of the MIPS32 M4K core - Metalink; the first implementation of the CorExtend feature - Metalink; the number-one market share leader in VDSL - Metalink; the first nine-core design - Metalink; the first 4Kc-based cable modem - Texas Instruments; the first implementation of the MIPS64 5K core -Wintegra; and market leading DVD and digital camera applications - Zoran.

Last month, MIPS hosted an invitation-only executive roundtable addressing "The future of intellectual property in a global economy".

In addition to John Bourgoin, MIPS Technologies' President and CEO, the event was attended by executives from design companies Adimos, Camero, Genoa Color, Infineon, Marvell, Mellanox Technologies, Metalink, Oren Semiconductor, Ramon Chips, Texas Instruments, Tower Semiconductor, Wintegra and Zoran.

Venture capital firms Alice Labs, Evergreen and Gemini were also represented.

The half-day event was held in Herzelia and also attended by invited press and other executives from MIPS Technologies.

Shlomo Gradman, General Manager of Monterey Design Systems, Israel and Chairman of the Hi-Tech CEO Forum at IMC (the Israeli Management Centre) acted as moderator of the roundtable and led participants in a lively discussion regarding both the opportunities and challenges of using intellectual property in today's global economy.

Some of these opportunities and challenges are unique to Israel and were candidly discussed from the viewpoints of the multiple markets represented.

Performance and cost-effective design solutions, both attributes of MIPS-based designs, ranked high on the list of requirements for success, both now and in the future.

Programmability and a robust ecosystem of third-party development tools were also discussed as essential requisites for SoC designers to quickly bring differentiated products to very competitive and price-sensitive markets.

All parties agreed that as the complexities of SoC design continue to increase, proven and reliable intellectual property will play a critical role in SoC design.

"We see some really interesting and innovative design work coming from our licensees in Israel".

"The insights and expertise shared during our roundtable discussion underscored the vital role that proven and reliable intellectual property, like the solutions provided by MIPS, plays in successful SoC design", commented John Bourgoin, CEO and President of MIPS Technologies.

"We are pleased that so many market leaders in Israel have embraced the MIPS architecture and appreciate the ingenuity and insight their progressive designs bring to the networking and consumer markets on a global level".

Existing licensees with MIPS-based activities in Israel include: Broadcom Corporation, Infineon Technologies, Marvell Semiconductor, Metalink, Wintegra, Texas Instruments and Zoran Corp.

Tool vendors and service providers within Israel include: AGAM, Avnet ASICs, Cadence, IDT, Intrinsix, Jungo, KAL, M-Systems, Magma, Mentor Graphics, Monterey Design Automation, Moonlight, SightSYS, SimPOD, Summit, Synopsys, Virage Logic and Wind River.
