Actions Semiconductor, one of China's leading fabless semiconductor companies, has licensed the MIPS32 24KEc Pro core to develop next-generation SoCs for portable, digital multimedia applications.

Actions Semiconductor, one of China's leading fabless semiconductor companies, has licensed the MIPS32 24KEc Pro core to develop next-generation SoCs for portable, digital multimedia applications.

Earlier this year, Actions announced the company began shipping samples of its new MIPS-based Series 13 product family - featuring the 4KEc core - to customers for evaluation.

Research firm iSuppli predicts that the portable media player (PMP)/MP3 player market will grow to 268.6 million units in 2011, rising at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.5% from 216.9 million units in 2007.

"We were looking for a solution which will enable us to deliver the best and most flexible PMP entertainment platform in the world, and leveraging the flexibility, high performance and low power consumption of the 24KEc Pro core has allowed Actions to do just that", said Saho Chuan Lee, CTO of Actions Semiconductor.

"This will form the basis of our new Series 13 product family which will enable us to deliver a whole new platform- allowing everybody to enjoy multimedia content anytime, anywhere".

"Actions Semiconductor's demonstrated expertise in portable multimedia product development and significant global market share has propelled them into a leadership position among China's semiconductor companies - and we're delighted that our cores have been integral to that success", said Brad Holtzinger, Vice President of Worldwide Sales for MIPS Technologies.

"We look forward to growing our relationship and extending MIPS Technologies' market presence in China and worldwide".

MIPS Technologies offers SoC designers a tailored solution for high-performance, low-power, cost-effective consumer applications.

The high performance 24KE cores incorporate efficient DSP capability, while significantly reducing overall SoC die area, cost, and power consumption and improving signal processing performance.

Leveraging the CorExtend capability of MIPS Technologies' Pro Series cores, development teams can add their own user defined instructions and functionality to their MIPS-based SoCs, lowering development costs and accelerating their time to market.
