Experts at Mitsumi, based in Jarrow, are producing new power supply systems for a domestic ventilation system that rids homes of condensation and black mould.

The resulting lack of humidity makes it harder for asthma triggering dust mites to breed in houses and flats.

A Glasgow housing association fitted the systems, called EnviroVent, in maisonettes across the city that were suffering from chronic condensation and mould.

One case study details a family who all suffered from chest complaints exacerbated by water droplets constantly streaming down walls and windows of their home.

Within two months of the vents' installation a Glasgow Council inspection found that the windows were dry and the mother and her two children had stopped using their inhalers and asthma medication.

Mitsumi is manufacturing the parts for Harrogate-based company Farmer Controls which designs and builds systems to combat condensation.

The EnviroVent is currently supplied to local authorities, housing associations and building companies, but plans are in the pipeline to sell them directly to the public.

Phil Nelson, Mitsumi Sales Manager, said: "Mitsumi was invited to design and develop a new power supply system to help the EnviroVent run at a lower power level making them more attractive from an environmental aspect while maintaining the same performance".

"The market is already growing for this product and could be huge when sales are opened up to the general public".

As well as operating on lower power the systems are environmentally sound as they can be removed and refurbished, cutting down the amount of materials going into landfill waste sites.

Frank Farmer, Managing Director of Farmer Controls, said: "We had a specific problem we needed to address and Mitsumi helped come up with the answer for us".

"The product is proving to be extremely successful and the health benefits of removing condensation are proving to be a big bonus for many householders".

Mitsumi UK was opened on Bede Industrial Estate in Jarrow back in 1987 producing radio and video tuners.

It went on to manufacture cable television set top boxes for the video tape and TV industry before moving into bespoke electronic design and contract manufacture.
