Jarrow based Mitsumi UK has appointed a new Sales Manager with a lifetime of electronics experience.

Phil Nelson, 40, from Gosforth, joins the electronics specialist, which is part of the worldwide Mitsumi group, with 25 years experience in the industry behind him.

He went into the industry as an apprentice with Northumberland electronics manufacturer Welwyn Components and as his specialist knowledge grew he moved into sales and business development which has been his main role over the last ten years.

His appointment comes at an important point in the firm's development as it moves further into contract manufacturing with Nelson's role to include widening Mitsumi UK's market area and to raising the company's profile.

Mitsumi UK was opened on Bede Industrial Estate in Jarrow back in 1987 producing radio and video tuners.

It went on to manufacture cable television set top boxes for the video tape and TV industry before moving into bespoke electronic design and contract manufacture.

The company now employs 65 skilled staff at the Jarrow plant and is part of the massive global Mitsumi electronics empire which has more than 40,000 employees in plants across the Far East, USA and Europe.

Nelson says: "There is a great resource and skill base at the Jarrow factory and great potential to take Mitsumi UK into new markets".

"There is continual investment in new equipment and working methods which we believe puts us in an excellent position to grow".

"For example, our in-house design department can take an idea from the drawing board through research and development and onto the production line all under one roof".
