Connectors secure SD memory cards
Molex has introduced a new range of connectors for use with Secure Digital (SD) memory cards.
The new miniature series is fully compliant with current USB 2.0 specifications, which enables speeds up to 480Mbit/s.
"This new mini-B connector system offers portable equipment makers a huge benefit in weight and space savings, and an industry standard miniature USB interface to design around", said Max Bassler, Corporate Marketing Director of I/O Products for Molex".
The design includes five circuits, with one circuit reserved for future use.
The connector system was jointly developed by a working group in the USB Implementors Forum.
The goal was to develop a connector that could fill the current gap in the USB product family for handheld applications.
Features of the 0.80mm (0.031in) pitch mini-B system include: 5000 cycles durability (compared with 1500 for standard USB); metal shielding and grounding fingers for EMI protection; and a detent lock for secure mating connection.
The connector is rated at the same 30V and 1.0A as standard USB connectors.
Molex's mini-B USB product offering includes through-hole and SMT PCB receptacles.
Both offer an above-board height of just 3.95mm (0.156in), about one-third the height of standard USB-B PCB receptacles.
The SMT version includes four wide solder tabs for secure PCB retention, and is available with cover tape for pick-and-place equipment.
The mini-B USB cable plug is offered in a standard length of 1.0 metres in mini-B-to-USB-A construction, with other lengths available.
The plug side can be ordered as a fully tested cable assembly or plug component kit.
The plug takes up approximately one third of the space in the interface area as standard USB-B plugs.
Custom logos can be placed on the overmold mini-B boot.
