Power connectors meet SSI specifications
The new DPS/MPS power connectors from Molex meet the Server System Infrastructure (SSI) open specifications for backplanes.
"As an active member of the Serial ATA Working Group, we provided our expertise in high performance connector and cable technology and helped deliver a design that provides a fast throughput and cost effective solution", said Scott Sommers, Molex strategic account manager.
"This new standard will ensure a common interface for the market.
We are pleased to be a part of this exciting new technology and emerging datacommunication standard that will significantly improve performance over time".
Since the 1980s, Parallel ATA has been the de facto storage interface and the I/O connector has simply evolved over time.
It is projected that Serial ATA will replace the parallel system and serve as the new standard for the next 10 years.
The innovative system has full backward software compatibility and a roadmap for future performance gains.
"Molex has been instrumental in supporting this initiative providing technical expertise and its leading edge connector and cable design proposal", said Jason Ziller, Intel technology initiatives manager and Serial ATA Working Group chairman.
"Molex, together with other participating companies in the working group, have defined a solution that has tremendous benefits over the parallel ATA solution".
Serial ATA is currently available in preproduction form (Serial ATA Developer's Kit) and may be requested by sending an email to serialata@molex.com.
A kit includes a double-ended cable assembly and two right-angle 7-pin signal plugs.
The Serial ATA connector supports 1.8, 2.5 and 3.5in form-factors with both cabled and direct docking systems.
Integrators may use varying plug options via the novel split-segment signal and power connector.
The connector offers a cost effective design which meets high-performance demands and extends system integration capabilities.
Molex has verified its new connector and cable will support Generation 2 targeted performance today.
